The +64 international calling code, associated with New Zealand, has been cited in warnings about Wangiri-style callback scams targeting Kenyan mobile users. According to reports, scammers place brief calls from unfamiliar international numbers and disconnect quickly, hoping recipients will call back out of curiosity.
Victims who return the calls may be redirected to premium-rate numbers, where recorded messages or deliberately prolonged connections can generate unusually high international calling charges. The longer a caller remains connected, the greater the potential financial loss through airtime or phone charges.
The Communications Authority of Kenya has warned the public about suspicious international callback scams and advised users not to return calls from unfamiliar foreign numbers unless the caller can be verified. The +64 prefix itself is legitimate and used in New Zealand, so the warning concerns suspicious numbers misused by scammers rather than all calls originating from that country.
