Florence Mwende Musau was sentenced to 44 months in a United States federal prison in Boston for her role in a romance fraud scheme targeting victims in the United States. According to the case, fictitious identities and profiles were created on dating and social media platforms to establish relationships with unsuspecting victims and gain their trust.
Federal authorities said Musau was part of a wider group whose fraudulent activities collectively caused victims losses exceeding USD 4 million. The scheme involved using fabricated online identities and deceptive relationships to persuade victims to send money under false pretences.
Musau was also ordered to pay USD 957,000 in restitution, equivalent to approximately KSh 119 million, to compensate for losses linked to the fraud. Unlike unresolved allegations, this case resulted in a federal conviction and sentence, and the description should therefore reflect the findings and penalties imposed by the US court.
